MUSIC DIRECTOR

TRINITY ANGLICAN CHURCH, CORNWALL

Located in downtown Cornwall, Trinity Church is the oldest congregation in the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa. As a congregation within the Area Parish of the St. Lawrence, Trinity works closely with our partner congregations in Lancaster and Long Sault. Trinity maintains an historic presence in the city and is increasingly involved in social justice and outreach initiatives in our community.

As we discern a new approach to music at Trinity, we are looking for an energetic and passionate Music Director to lead our community’s musical worship. The Director will work closely with clergy, the church choir, and volunteer musicians. The congregation is very comfortable with traditional Anglican worship: hymns from the hymnbook Common Praise, led with organ and choir. In recent years, Trinity has also embraced various styles of contemporary music. Once a month, a service is organized on a Sunday morning, featuring keyboard, vocals, and contemporary praise music. The Music Director would be encouraged to bring a spirit of experimentation and creativity to the work of integrating various musical traditions and perspectives within the life of the congregation.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Church Minister, the Music Director’s responsibilities include:

  • leading the congregation in musical worship at the weekly Sunday 10AM service

  • leading musical worship at additional services for Christmas, Easter, weddings, funerals, etc.

  • leading the church choir in weekly rehearsal and in liturgies from September – June

  • selecting and preparing music for worship

  • collaborating with parish clergy

  • working with a diverse, accepting community

  • encouraging the community’s participation in music

  • setting up/tearing down any instruments and/or equipment used

Skills and Experience
The Music Director will possess:

  • musical leadership experience

  • musical training

  • a keen awareness of the importance of music in community building

  • a desire to help the community grow in faith through music

  • excellent communication skills

  • good time management and personal organizational abilities

  • the abiity to work collaboratively in teams

It is an asset, but not essential, to have a church background.

This is a part-time position of 8 hours per week at $25 per hour. For candidates from outside the Cornwall area consideration will be given for travel time. The possibility of using the church space for private music lessons could also be discussed.

If this opportunity excites you, please apply with a resume and cover letter that describes how your experience relates to the qualifications we seek.
